Pop Quiz: What do these stories have in common?

Posted by on | August 15, 2019 | Comments Off

If you follow the right side of the blogosphere you will be familiar with this story.

Virpi Mikkonen, cookbook author and plant-based food blogger at Vanelja, recently announced her decision to eat meat and other animal products again. The Finnish entrepreneur said her decade of following a mostly vegan diet led to health concerns like a rash, period loss, and early menopause. After quitting veganism, she says, “I feel energetic, motivated. I’m sleeping better, the hot flushes, and aching in my body have stopped.”

If you follow the left side of the blogosphere you will be familiar with this story.

Joshua Harris, author of the 1997 book “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” and a former megachurch pastor, wrote in an Instagram post Friday that he “lived in repentance” for his prior teachings in the church and in his writing. A week prior, he announced that he and his wife of 21 years had separated.

So now for the quiz. What do these stories have in common and why are they so popular?

The answer is that they are the same story.

The left and the right are not ideologies, they are religious movements.  Whenever someone who is prominent in a religious movement recants, the participants in the other religious movement feel a tremendous ratification of their faith.

The right likes it when vegans quit.  The left likes it when Christians quit.  Both sides republish and Tweet these personal recantations as if they are indicative of the failings of the entire movement.
