Boehner rips GOP, Pres. Trump, but OK with pot

Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has assessed the Republican Party and found it wanting. You remember Boehner? He’s the guy who broke into tears and slurred his words at the drop of a martini glass. The one who was so fond of tanning lamps that he sported an orange-tinged face.

Now, staging a rendition of Jeff Flake’s favorite tune, Boehner is warbling, “President Trump has ruined the Republican Party.”

“There is no Republican party. There’s a Trump party. The Republican Party is kinda taking a nap somewhere,” he recently told attendees at the Mackinac Policy Conference in Michigan.

“Well, you know, Donald Trump, who I know well, was one of my supporters, when I was speaker,” Boehner incoherently recalled. “I was having a rough week, Trump would call me, pat me on the back, cheer me up, played a lot of golf together. But president? Really? I never quite saw this.”

To calm his angst, Boehner, who resigned under pressure in 2015, has taken a new gig as spokesman  for the U.S. marijuana industry, joining the advisory board of Acreage Holdings, a company that cultivates, processes and dispenses cannabis in 11 U.S. states.  It was originally known by the more accurately descriptive name of High Street Holdings.

An odd man who exemplified the Peter Principle, Boehner was previously quoted as saying he was “unalterably opposed” to legalization of marijuana.

Now he says, “Over the last 10 or 15 years, the American people’s attitudes have changed dramatically. I find myself in that same position. My thinking on cannabis has evolved.” How much it cost to have his thinking “evolve, ” we might never know. Acreage Holdings did not to disclose his salary.

Boehner’s son-in-law could also be a compelling factor for his change of heart on weed.

Marijuana remains federally illegal and is classified as a Schedule I narcotic, under the Controlled Substance Act.
